Fix a Bad Homemade Hair Dye Job

Self-grooming has been on the rise ever since the pandemic took over the world. With the social distancing measure prevailing in Hong Kong since the beginning of the year, hair dyeing at home has been on the rise.

With so many color options, dyeing at home can be easy. Hence, anybody would want to experiment with different colors. But taking matters into one’s own hands can often lead to trouble. A homemade hair dye job does not go well all the time.

A bad homemade hair dye job can leave you with chaotic results. These include damaged hair, not getting the color of your choice, and so on. All these problems are common and can be dealt with at home too. However, if leaving it to a professional is the best way to deal with them, below are a few ways to fix a bad homemade hair dye job.

 The Dyeing is uneven.

One of the most common problems with a homemade hair dye job is uneven dyeing. This is especially true for beginners. They tend to apply the dye quickly, but most of the hair strands are just left out of it. And if they are not left out, some strands get darker than others.

Hence, your hair can have different tones at once. If the dye job goes uneven, it can get difficult to reach the problematic strands once more. To tackle this, some women dye their hair all over again. But frequent and redundant dyeing can lead to unwanted damage.

One way to prevent uneven dyeing is to plan well before beginning to dye. Before you begin dyeing, you must divide your hair section by section. This is even more important for thicker and longer hair as they can be more difficult to handle. Regardless of your hair length and type though, divide your hair section wise.

If you find going section-by-section difficult even to fix the uneven tones, try a clarifying shampoo. You can use the shampoo to remove the lighter tones and apply dye there again. However, this is a lengthy process and an unnecessary one too. It’s better to go to a professional instead and get your hair properly dyed in the very beginning.

The Dyeing turned out lighter than expected.

You wanted a light shade for your hair but it turned out lighter than your expectations. If that happens, you should not buy a darker color and dye it over your hair. Doing that can cause damage to your hair.

What you can do is use pigmented hair conditioners instead. Some conditioners come specifically with pigments to dye your hair strands. Coloring conditioners are available in a variety of colors. But a shade of dark brown can instantly make your hair darker.

If you want to experiment more, you can also try more shades. Think of purples, greens, and reds. A hair dye job gone wrong can also be turned into a playful experiment with an unusual color.

The Dyeing turned out darker than expected.

What if it is the other way around? If you wanted a dark shade, but it has gone darker than you planned on? In such a situation, applying a lighter shade will not solve the problem. It is much harder to go from dark to light than it is from light to dark.

The only way to fix this is to loosen the pigments so that they eventually get off the hair. One of the products that can help achieve this is a clarifying shampoo. A clarifying shampoo extracts all kinds of dirt from your hair strands. Since it is very strong, so it also helps in removing the pigments.

To use a clarifying shampoo effectively, you have to wash your hair multiple times with hot water. For the color to lift off, using a clarifying shampoo three to four times, along with rinsing is enough.

Remember that the clarifying shampoo is good only for one time. It should not be used in the long term. It should only be used when your hair requires immediate fixing. If you use a clarifying shampoo a lot, it can damage and weaken your hair. So avoid extended usage of a clarifying shampoo.

The Dyeing damaged the hair.

Unfortunately, damaged hair can only be dealt with with a haircut. If you leave your hair damaged for too long, it will ruin your hair in the long run. Due to the ongoing restrictions of the pandemic, you may not find a haircut the right answer.

There are some hair treatment options that you can leave in your hair for moisturizing it. These products include oils and conditioners that can be used before applying shampoo. Some products can be left in the hair, while others have to be washed.

One such treatment is that from the Olaplex brand. Along with the shampoo and conditioner, you can use its hair perfector treatment. This can be applied to the hair and combed through before you go to sleep every night.
